Stop & Shop Alerts Customers to Voluntary Recall of Simply Enjoy Brand Dessert Sauces

(QUINCY, MASS.) January 23, 2009 – Stop & Shop has announced a voluntary recall of Simply Enjoy Chocolate Peanut Butter Dessert Sauce and Simply Enjoy Coffee Caramel Dessert Sauce. The items were removed from store shelves after the manufacturer, Stonewall Kitchen, informed Stop & Shop that some aspects of the manufacturing process did not meet their food safety standards and the products may have the potential to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium which can cause life-threatening illness or death. Consumers are warned not to use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled. Simply Enjoy products are part of Stop & Shop's corporate brand line.

The following products are affected by this recall:

  • 12 oz. containers of Simply Enjoy Chocolate Peanut Butter Sauce
    UPC # 68826706502
  • 13 oz containers of Simply Enjoy Coffee Caramel Dessert Sauce
    UPC # 68826706503

Stop & Shop has received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of this product.

Botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning, can cause the following symptoms: general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing. Difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation may also me common symptoms. People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention.
