STOP & SHOP AND GIANT FOOD OF LANDOVER, MD CONTINUE TO PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD
From now through Easter, many customers are preparing more seafood-based meals in observance of Lent. Stop & Shop and Giant Food of Landover, Md. are proud to be leaders working for seafood sustainability by supporting suppliers who are working toward methods of fishing and farming that minimize environmental impact.
Since 2000, Stop & Shop and Giant Food have partnered with the internationally-renowned New England Aquarium in Boston, Mass. as a means to provide consumers with well-managed, sustainable seafood. The New England Aquarium has a long history of ocean conservation, research and education and works with Stop & Shop and Giant to ensure consumers have increased access to seafood available from seafood farms, hatcheries, fisheries, and processing plants that incorporate sustainable seafood programs and practices.
"Our goal is to provide customers with high quality seafood and take a leadership role in encouraging sustainable fishing and farming practices among our seafood suppliers," said Tracy Taylor, senior buyer of seafood for Stop & Shop and Giant. "Because we believe in maintaining our ecosystems to provide seafood for many years to come, we have chosen not to carry Chilean sea bass, orange roughy, skates, rays, or any shark species in our stores until the issues regarding the sustainability of these species are addressed. We offer our customers a sustainable alternative to Chilean sea bass, long-line caught Pacific black cod, which is very similar in taste, texture, and ease of preparation."
Stop & Shop and Giant consult the New England Aquarium on the seafood items they offer their customers, but also work with the industry to make incremental improvements toward sustainability. In addition, the New England Aquarium, Stop & Shop and Giant, and their vendor partners are working collaboratively to develop practices that produce high quality fish, while minimizing environmental impact. Not only is seafood sustainability important to healthy aquatic ecosystems, seafood is a healthy meal choice. Seafood is a good source for a variety of nutrients, yielding high amounts of protein, vitamins, and minerals. Fish including salmon, trout, sardines, and herring are good sources of Omega-3 fatty acids, which, according to the American Heart Association, benefit both healthy people and those at risk of cardiovascular disease.
"Many seafood choices are low in fat, calories, and cholesterol, making them a smart choice for a healthy diet. We make finding these choices easy for our customers through our Healthy Ideas logo," said Andrea Astrachan, vice president of consumer affairs.
