Stop & Shop announces further value improvement and price reductions
(November 30, 2006, Quincy, MA.) On Friday, December 1, The Stop & Shop Supermarket
Company will unveil its new paper aisle, the latest phase of a program that promises to
stretch their customers' shopping dollar even further. Customers will find lower prices
on their favorite brands of napkins, paper towels, facial tissue, bath tissue, trash
bags, paper cups and plates, food storage containers, plastic wrap, sandwich bags and
related household items.
Designed to redefine Stop & Shop and strengthen its strategic position in the
marketplace, the Company's Value Improvement Program (VIP) will continue across the store
aisles in the months to come and reduce the cost of a typical family's weekly market
basket.
"This program responds to the core needs of our customers: better prices, better quality,
and genuine value across the board," said José Alvarez, President and CEO of The Stop
& Shop Supermarket Company. "By challenging some outdated beliefs on grocery
retailing, and by changing the way we do business, we're finding new ways to lower the
cost of a typical family's weekly shopping trip while preserving the quality shopping
experience that customers expect."
Customers have already noticed the lower prices and improved freshness in Stop &
Shop's Produce departments, where VIP officially launched earlier in the fall. Alvarez
said customer response has been overwhelmingly positive.
"This proves that we understand our customers' needs and are still their supermarket of
choice," he said. "We're confident our customers will be just as impressed by what they
see in paper products. These are only the first stages of what will be seen across our
stores."
Alvarez said customers will notice a reorganization of the paper goods department, with a
new emphasis on popular products. "While these products will remain in the same aisle, we
are streamlining their placement to create a less cluttered environment that will make it
easier to shop," he said.
"The Company is working hard to communicate this new program to our customers, using
television and radio ads along with extensive web advertising, outdoor billboards, our
weekly circulars and in-store signs," Alvarez said.
Customers will see ads toting the new paper aisles starting December 1.
"Our customers love the changes they have seen in our supermarkets so far," Alvarez said.
"The best part is, we're only getting started."
