Stop & Shop Launches 16th Annual Campaign Against Hunger
Stop & Shop to Raise $1 million for Local Hunger Relief Organizations through Company's 'Food for Friends' Program
(Quincy, MA) October 27, 2005 -- The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company today announced
that on Sunday, October 30, the company will kick-off the 16th annual Food for Friends
program to raise over $1 million for more than 300 local hunger relief organizations
throughout the Northeast.
As part of Stop & Shop's Food for Friends campaign, all Stop & Shop stores will
sell paper turkeys at checkout for $1 each. The turkeys can be personalized by each
customer and will be displayed throughout the store. One hundred percent of the funds
raised in Stop & Shop stores will be donated to the local hunger relief
organizations.
"This year, like no other, Stop & Shop customers have come to aid those in need,"
said William Cummings, EVP of Operations for Stop & Shop. "Whether it was for those
who lost everything in a natural disaster, or were facing pediatric cancer or juvenile
diabetes, our customers and associates came through time and time again to help those
less fortunate."
But despite the large call from various charitable causes this year, Cummings said there
is still a strong need for the Food for Friends program.
"In the United States, five million people live at or below the poverty level, and nearly
a third of them are children," he said. "Providing meals to those who need help is a
cause that directly impacts each community in which we operate and gives each store the
opportunity to form a lasting partnership with a local food pantry and make a
difference."
Stop & Shop is known for its charitable assistance. The supermarket chain has raised
millions of dollars each year fighting hunger, childhood diseases and supporting the
communities it serves.
