Stop & Shop Puts Spinach Back on Shelves After New Federal Announcement

(Quincy, MA - September 26, 2006) - Following new guidelines from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Stop & Shop Supermarkets will offer customers a selection of bagged Savoy spinach and bagged salads as early as Wednesday, September 27. The grocery chain removed these items in a voluntary recall on September 15 after the FDA warned of an E.coli outbreak.

Customers will be notified of the change through store signage and through the company's website: www.stopandshop.com.

"Food safety is of the utmost importance to us, and we worked closely with the federal authorities to ensure that these products would not be made available until they were confirmed as safe," said Andrea Astrachan, Consumer Advisor for Stop & Shop. "We're glad that we can offer bagged spinach to customers once again."

Astrachan said all bagged spinach now being made available for sale is grown in Colorado and Canada, areas which were not connected to the recent outbreak.
