Stop & Shop Offers "Balance"

Free Brochure Available at Stores Filled with Healthy Ideas

Quincy, MA (July 28, 2006) Confused by conflicting dieting advice and tempted by summer barbecues and ice cream treats? Looking for simple, practical advice on how to have a sensible diet and an effective exercise program? The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company is offering "It's All About Balance," a 12-page free brochure giving customers tips on how to balance eating healthy with physical activity.

"The message is simple; the energy you take in should be balanced by the energy you expend," said Andrea Astrachan, Consumer Advisor for Stop & Shop. "With proper planning and some helpful tips, you can get healthy without feeling deprived. That's what this booklet is about."

Based on information found at MyPyramid.gov, the federal website promoting healthy eating and activity, the brochure features advice on how to "bank" calories, gives tips on portion control, recommends safe and healthy exercises and gives a variety of suggestions for smart snacking.

The booklet contains helpful factoids such as:

  • One cup of potatoes, rice or pasta (a recommended serving size) is about the size of a tennis ball.
  • An hour of walking can burn almost 200 calories.
  • Just eating 100 calories a day more than you need could cause you to gain 10 pounds in a year.

"People want to eat healthy and enjoy treats too," Astrachan said. "This booklet makes it easy to make the right choices for you and your family without eating too many calories."

The brochures are now available at all of Stop & Shop's 380 stores and can be found near the store entrance. An electronic copy of the booklet can also be printed from the Stop & Shop website at www.stopandshop.com.
