Three charities. Three teams. One company's campaign to help save lives.
Stop & Shop and Giant Food look to raise $5.25 million to "strike out" childhood cancer in the 2007 Triple Winner campaign
(Quincy, MA - April 26, 2007) - The Triple Winner Game, one of the most successful
fundraising programs in the country to fight childhood cancer, has launched its 2007
season. The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company and Giant Food will join the Boston Red
Sox, New York Mets, and Baltimore Orioles to raise money for the Jimmy Fund, Memorial
Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the Children's Cancer Foundation to help fight
pediatric cancer and search for a cure.
Now in its 17th year, The Triple Winner Program will raise $5.25 million to save lives
and make a difference in its efforts to fight pediatric cancer. Since its inception in
1991, the Triple Winner Game has raised $38 million to support research and care.
"When it comes to charitable programs, Triple Winner is our championship series," said
José Alvarez, President and CEO of the Stop & Shop Supermarket Company and Giant
Food. "It's both humbling and rewarding, emotional and uplifting for everyone involved.
It truly shows what businesses and communities are capable of when they come together for
a common goal."
The Triple Winner Game is a scratch card promotion in which every ticket can be an
instant winner of either a free product, a gift card or cash prize up to $10,000. The
program, which runs until Thursday, July 12, allows customers who make a $1 donation in
any Stop & Shop or Giant Food store to receive a Triple Winner Game ticket.
All money raised from the Triple Winner program in Massachusetts, New Hampshire,
Connecticut, and Rhode Island will directly benefit the Jimmy Fund and the Stop &
Shop Family Pediatric Brain Tumor Clinic at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Speaking about
Triple Winner, Jimmy Fund Chairman Mike Andrews said, "Stop & Shop, its suppliers,
and its customers are dedicated supporters of the Jimmy Fund and are invaluable partners
in our efforts to conquer cancer."
Continuing a seven-year tradition, all money raised from the Triple Winner Game in New
York and New Jersey will directly benefit Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dr.
Paul Meyers, Vice Chair of the center's Department of Pediatrics, stressed how important
Stop & Shop's support has been, saying, "The generous support of the Stop & Shop
Company, the heroic work of the employees, and the overwhelming support from the public
has provided critical funds not only to continue essential research activities, but to
develop dramatic new initiatives aimed at improving the lives of children with
cancer."
Joining forces with Stop & Shop will be the Boston Red Sox and the New York Mets, who
will promote the program to the hundreds of thousands of fans who flock to Fenway Park
and Shea Stadium each summer. Executives from both teams spoke on being part of the
Triple Winner team.
"The Boston Red Sox are proud to continue our support of The Jimmy Fund through the
Triple Winner Game," said Sam Kennedy, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for
the Red Sox. "We're thrilled to be able to support Stop & Shop in their fight against
pediatric cancer."
"The New York Mets are privileged to once again partner with Stop & Shop and the
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center to help strike out childhood cancer," said Dave
Howard, Executive Vice President of Business Operations for the Mets. "We cannot think of
a more laudable effort than fighting pediatric cancer, and we are very pleased with the
major strides that the Triple Winner Program has made over the past seven years. Together
we will continue to make a difference."
For the third year in a row, Giant Food of Landover, MD will participate in the Triple
Winner Game, with all proceeds going to the Children's Cancer Foundation, a charity
committed to raising funds for building facilities and for the research and treatment of
cancers that affect children. "Because of Giant's participation in the Triple Winner
Game, we're able to give the gift of life to children fighting pediatric cancer," said
Shirley Howard, President of the Children's Cancer Foundation.
Assisting Giant will be the Baltimore Orioles, who will spread the word of Triple Winner
to fans attending Oriole Park.
"The Orioles are proud to team up with Giant's Triple Winner program and provide our fans
with the opportunity to demonstrate their support to help eradicate this terrible
disease," said Greg Bader, Orioles Director of Communications.
As they did in 2006, Edy's Grand Ice Cream will support The Triple Winner Game by
bringing back Triple Winner Neapolitan, a limited edition flavor what will raise up to
$25,000 in support of children's cancer charities.
"The amount of support Triple Winner receives is staggering, and you can see it reflected
in every level of our business," Alvarez said. "The excitement surrounding Triple Winner
is felt in our front office to store management to our participating vendors to our
customers. I'm very proud to be a part of it."
