STOP & SHOP HIGHLIGHTS "SUPER STAR FOODS" NEW FREE HEALTHY LIVING BOOKLET

Quincy, MA (March 31, 2006) - More than half of Americans aren't getting enough magnesium, about 40 percent aren't getting enough vitamin A, and nearly one-third aren't getting desirable intakes of vitamin C from the foods and beverages in their diets, according to a recent government report. As part of their continuing effort to educate customers on the USDA's MyPyramid food groups, Stop & Shop is featuring Super Star Foods in their free quarterly Healthy Living booklet. Super Star Foods are those foods that are rich in nutrients, have added health benefits, taste great, and are easy to include in one's diet. The colorful Healthy Living booklets provide tips and recipes on many Super Star Foods including oats, spinach, blueberries, yogurt, avocados, and salmon. The booklets are available near the entrance in all Stop & Shop stores.

"When we hear so much about the obesity crisis today, it's surprising to learn that most Americans aren't getting enough of some nutrients in their diets," said Andrea Astrachan, Consumer Advisor at Stop & Shop. "Too many of our calories are 'empty calories' that are not providing essential nutrients. Stop & Shop's Healthy Living booklet offers consumers information on the importance of eating nutrient rich foods including fruits, vegetables and whole grains, low fat dairy products and lean meats."

Stop & Shop has provided simple preparation tips and recipes to help customers incorporate these nutrient rich foods into their menu plans. While shopping, customers will also notice colorful signs to identify these foods in the aisles of the store too! "Eating a variety of foods from all the food groups and balancing calories with physical activity remains the key to good health," said Ms. Astrachan. "However, within each food group, there are some foods that pack more of a nutrient punch than others. Including these and similar foods on a regular basis adds up to a healthier diet."

The Healthy Living booklet featuring Super Star Foods was written by Stop & Shop's in-house nutritionists and reviewed by its health and wellness advisor, Dr. George Blackburn, S. Daniel Abraham Associate Professor of Nutrition and Associate Director of Nutrition, Division of Nutrition, Harvard Medical School.
