The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company/Giant Food Raise
$1.2 million for Victims of Hurricane Katrina
All Funds Collected Will be Donated to the American Red Cross
and America's Second Harvest-The Nation's Food Bank Network
Quincy, MA (October 14, 2005) - The Stop Shop Supermarket Company and Giant Food
today announced that they have collected more than $1.2 million from customers and
associates to fund the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts of the American Red Cross and
America's Second Harvest - The Nation's Food Bank Network.
The $1.2 million raised is part of nearly $3 million contributed by the Ahold family of
companies and its customers. In September, Royal Ahold's head office in the Netherlands
announced a $1 million corporate donation from Ahold and its affiliates including Stop
Shop, Giant Food, Giant Food Stores, Tops, Peapod and U.S. Foodservice.
"My heartfelt thanks go out to our caring customers and associates, who have shown such
great generosity," said Marc Smith, President and CEO of The Stop Shop Supermarket
Company/Giant Food. "Once Katrina struck, we knew we had to respond, to provide some
level of comfort to those living on the Gulf Coast. I'm proud that our stores were able
to serve as a collection point for those in need."
Prominently displayed signs throughout all Stop Shop and Giant Food stores have
asked customers to donate funds for the Katrina relief effort since early September. Stop
Shop and Giant also have collected funds for Katrina victims at their main offices
and distribution centers.
In the days and weeks following Hurricane Katrina, Stop Shop and Giant Food also
donated food and supplies to the devastated Gulf Coast. Donations ranged from gift cards
for displaced Katrina victims to medical supplies for local doctors headed into the Gulf
Coast.
Both Stop Shop and Giant are both known for their charitable assistance. The two
supermarket chains have raised millions of dollars each year fighting hunger, childhood
diseases and supporting the communities they serve.
The Stop Shop Supermarket Company LLC and Giant Food LLC employ more than 86,000
associates and operate more than 565 stores throughout the Eastern United States. We are
part of Ahold, one of the world's largest food providers.
